I’m not just a baker, I’m a cook too (I know, I’m pretty excited about it!). I cook every meal in our household, every day. It’s always a healthy, homemade, and satisfying meal. I don’t cook with processed foods, or items that have unnecessary additives. It’s important to me what my husband and I put in our bodies and I try really hard to feed us the best quality food possible.
With that said, it only makes sense that most of the meals I make have items that are made completely from scratch. I like knowing what ingredients are put into what we’re eating – It’s important to me. So when I started planning a meal that would involve hot sauce (or at least I knew that hot sauce was going to be a great addition), I decided I was going to make my own homemade version.
I searched out for a recipe that I knew I would be able to tweak to our taste and heat level. What I found was a great tomato-based hot sauce that had simple ingredients and wasn’t time consuming. After making this recipe, I knew it would be my go-to hot sauce for a long time coming.
This hot sauce is right in SO many ways. The base for this hot sauce is comprised of mainly tomatoes, and 1 onion to add flavor. Then I added 2 anaheim peppers (which are mild), and 2 habanero peppers (which are spicy). The combination of these peppers created a medium spice-level for the sauce, which we felt was perfect. However, if you wanted to make it spicier, you can always add 1 or 2 more habanero peppers.
Then with the addition of vinegar it adds the right amount of acid to offset the heat and tomatoes.
When you first taste the sauce you are able to actually taste the flavors in the sauce. You get the depth of flavor and the sauce adds extra flavor to whatever you are putting it on, instead of masking the other foods and just giving you complete heat. Then after the flavors come through you get the heat and it lingers on your tongue.
I truly loved this hot sauce (so did Steve and everyone else who tried it!). It’s a great addition to any type of food. We actually just ran out of our last batch yesterday so I’m off to making more today :)!
Homemade Hot Sauce
Tomato-Based Hot Sauce (Medium Heat)

Makes: About 2 cups
1 tbsp. Olive Oil
1 Onion, Diced (About 1 cup)
2 Medium Anaheim Peppers, Diced
2 Habanero Peppers, Stemmed, halved, and seeded
4 cloves of Garlic, Minced
3 cups of Tomatoes, Diced
1 cup Distilled White Vinegar
4 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Fresh Ground Pepper
1 tbsp. Sugar
In a large saucepan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion, Anaheim peppers, habanero peppers, and garlic. Cook until the onions become soft, about 4 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium and add the tomatoes, vinegar, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes become soft, about 5 minutes.
Carefully and slowly transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor (I used a blender). *If you have a hand-held blender, you can keep the mixture in the pan and puree it in the pan. Puree the mixture until it is completely smooth. Be careful blending the hot mixture – Make sure the mixture is able to breath by allowing oxygen to go inside of the blender and some of the heat to escape.
Place a fine mesh strainer over a medium bowl, and carefully pour the pureed mixture through the strainer. Using a spatula, press the mixture into the strainer to allow all of the liquid to get through. Throw away the larger pieces in the strainer.
Allow the sauce to cool completely, uncovered, in the bowl. Once cool, transfer the sauce to a sealed glass jar. Store in the refrigerator until ready to be eaten.
This sauce keeps well in the refrigerator. It will last about 2-3 months. (Mine only lasted a month because we ate it so fast!)
